Bank Rakyat BizMatch In Tokyo Eyes RM500m In Deals For Malaysian MSMEs
By Maahgeshan
Tokyo (12June) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Japan has opened fresh export avenues for Malaysia’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), beyond the focus on large-scale investments and multinationals.
The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), said it is shifting priority from helping MSMEs start and survive to helping them win bigger market share at home and abroad amid supply chain strains caused by geopolitical conflict.
“Our focus has evolved beyond merely helping MSMEs start or sustain operations.
"It now centres on ensuring they can penetrate and secure larger market shares both domestically and abroad,” Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said.
The push aligns with KUSKOP’s ABCD framework, specifically “D – Drive Market Access”, which targets expanded market reach, international networks and export opportunities.
The efforts are producing results. In February, a “Make Malaysian Businesses Great” business-matching session at the Makkah Halal Forum 2026 in Saudi Arabia generated potential transactions worth RM2 billion.
Bank Rakyat, with KUSKOP’s support, followed up with Bank Rakyat BizMatch: Make Malaysian Businesses Great in Tokyo, held alongside the Nikkei Forum Future of Asia 2026.
Seven Malaysian firms met 27 Japanese companies to explore deals in food and beverages, agriculture, commodity-based manufacturing and green technology.
Based on sessions held on 9 June, organisers project more than RM500 million in potential transactions over the next 12 months, subject to negotiations, product qualification, regulatory approvals and commercial agreements.
Bank Rakyat also approved and disbursed financing totalling nearly RM300 million to the seven Malaysian companies to expand operations, raise production capacity and enter new markets.
“Combining access to financing with access to markets is core to nurturing Malaysian enterprises that can grow regionally and globally, and strengthen national competitiveness,” Bank Rakyat said.
